Welcome to Mercy Women Catholic Hospital - Mankessim

There was a growing concern over the years among health providers located in the rural areas of Ghana about the increasing level of Maternal Mortality, the incidence of Obstetric Fistula and inadequate facilities to handle maternal and child health conditions. This led the Catholic Archdiocese of Cape Coast to establish Mercy Women’s Catholic Hospital in Mankessim in 2003 to primarily repair clients who have developed Obstetric Fistula condition as a result of child birth and to provide effective maternal health. Mercy Women’s Hospital is in Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region of Ghana.

Who We Are

The hospital was established by His Eminence Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson, the then Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast with support from Rev. Sr. Elizabeth Burns of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Louise, a Catholic religious congregation and started full operations in 2010. In 2012 the hospital was upgraded into a primary hospital status with an approximated total bed capacity of 150. 

Since its inception, the focus of the hospital has been on obstetric fistula and maternal & child and general hospital services. 

There hospital has a Female medical and surgical ward, Male medical and surgical ward, Paediatric ward, NICU, Emergency services, OPD, Laboratory and Diagnostics services and Surgical services. The facility also has the largest Fistula Treatment Centre within Sub-Saharan Africa with a forty-five (45) bed capacity, a theatre complex, Laboratory, Pharmacy and a ‘patient-relatives’ hostel. The hospital is under the umbrella of the National Catholic Health Service (NCHS) and registered with the Health Facility and Regulatory Agency (HEFRA), Ghana, and a member of the Christian Health Services Association of Ghana (CHAG), under the Ministry of Health, Ghana. The hospital also serves as the referral hub for most of the hospitals and clinics dotted in and around the Mfantseman Municipality.

The Future at MWCH

Moving towards sustainability
Planning for the future of Mercy Women’s Catholic Hospital is a process which we believe should involve all stakeholders. It is an on-going exercise and we realise that we need the input of everyone, the workers, the Board of Directors, the benefactors and the volunteers, in order to have a comprehensive plan to work with. The staff of the Mercy Women’s Catholic Hospital, Mankessim, with assistance from external consultants, developed a 10 Year (2016 – 2025) Strategic Plan for the hospital.

On-going sustained funding was identified as a particularly important issue. The Hospital’s level of funding has reduced substantially in the years past and this has had a serious impact on the operations of the hospital. This is an area which must be improved upon so that the short-term and long-term future planned projects for the hospital can remain secured. In line with the Hospital’s Strategic Plan, it is important to start developing income-generating activities. Some of the income generating activities we have been pursuing include, staff accommodation project, mortuary project, borehole water project, solar energy project, capacity building project (exchange programme with the University of Limerick), etc. All these programmes are aimed at assisting the development of more sustained and self-reliance activities.
